P1 Light/Form: FINAL

October 2, 2008 by adu1111

Hello,

So here is my final for Project One. The idea behind the narrative in this, is that you start out in an regular space and you are taken on a journey that splinter off from reality and takes you through a psychedelic universe and then brings you to the norm. My main inspiration for this was psychedelic music videos from the sixties. I really wanted it to have a really hallucinatory feel. I also wanted the feeling to be very intense while in the decaying part, so I used the repitition of imagery to give an overwhelming feeling.

I’m fairly happy with the final result, although I feel if I were more proficient in Final Cut I would be able to better communicate my idea. I guess that just comes with practice. Here it is:

P1 Sound Essay: Exercise 3

For exercise 3 we had to choose three words, one noun and two verbs from a provided list and create a ’sound essay’ that captures the ideas embodied in the chosen noun and verbs. I chose; Space, Decay, Splinter.

My initial idea was to try to capture the feeling of space by using panning and volume automation. I wanted to capture the idea of decay and splinter by employing various wave form shape techniques such as bit crushing to get what I felt were splintery, decaying sounds.

I also wanted to portray a narrative with this sound essay. The idea is that it starts out an everyday space that feels normal, but then this space beings to splinter and decay as you travel across a sound plane that is getting increasingly turbulent, and then you return to the original space.

*For the best effect, listen to this through headphones with the volume turned up and your eyes closed.*

P1 Light/Form: Exercise 2

September 30, 2008 by adu1111

We had another in-class exercise, the purpose was to introduce us to editing techniques and explore Graphic, rhythmic, temporal and spatial relations within shots. Me and Jeanna were partners again, our assignment was to take 60 shots where the focus was a circle. When editing these together, there was a motor-cycle that we found which had several circles, and resulted in a similar string of shots that I really liked, so I decided to focus on them for the sequence. Also wanted to use Red as a prominent secondary color in the sequence, the first being the grey of the motorcycle.

P1 Light/Form: Exercise 1

So we had to do an in-class exercise where Jeanna an I were tasked with taking one photo every minute for an hour in the same spot, so essentially doing time-lapse photography. The results of our first try were not very good. Since we didn’t have a tripod the camera moved around quite a bit, and we were very inconsistent with the timing of our shots, so when we put the shots in sequence the movement was irregular. We decided that we would try again on our own.

At home I had a tripod, so I was able to use it to stablize the shots. I wanted to shoot something that would change drastically in terms of light, over an hour. So I decided to photograph the sunset. I shot the photos from my balcony facing west around 6:30 to 7:30. Here are the results:

I thought that this was too dark. It turned out that what I estimated the lighting would be was not what it ended up being. So, I decided to give it another try the next day, here’s the result:

In the end, I’m not sure which I like better. The lighting in the second attempt is better, but I think the first attempt is more visually interesting.

Hey Time-Based Communication! I’m finally here! I havn’t posted since the start of class because I’ve been really behind, but I’m all caught up now and will posting regularly. I’m going to post all my exercises right after this, so you’ll be able to check them all out.
